Rue de l'abondance

Marie-Hélène Massin & 54' — 1994

« I’ve lived in a mixed neighbourhood in Brussels for almost a decade now. Over the years, I’ve realised that, for my neighbours, my family and I will soon be the last Belgians, or at least, the last old style Belgians… Among my neighbours, there is Mithat, the chemist, Madame Nobels, the neighbour across the street, Mehmet, who lays and refinishes wood floors, and Fadime, who just landed a serious job as a translator. And Belkis, she is going to be a singer. There is Mulys: he is the bête noire of his family because he is still a student. And then there is Osman, who is trying to help me discover the benefits of sports. There is also Nail and Senol, who are trying to teach me a few of the rudiments of Turkish. For a year, I « encountered » them in the neighbourhood. » Marie-Hélène Massin. A documentary shot in a Turkish quarter, somewhere in Brussels, from a universal point.
