Dope territory

Joao Correa & 52/86' — 1986

A picture of young people facing drugs… Five years elapsed between the conception of the film and its first performance. Who had to be filmed? Witnesses, drug addicts, dope peddlers, dealers or those who fight the scourge? What had to be underlined: the sensational, the horrible, or suffering? Joao Correa had already made a first dramatized documentary that was a real satirical tract: « Forgotten Children » (« Les enfants de l’oubli »). Among other things, that visual denunciation originated a revision of the law about the protection of young people in Belgium. For « Dope territory » he chose the same process as Bertrand Blier for his well-known film: « Hitler? Who is that? » (« Hitler, connais pas ») (1962): he interviewed human beings who discuss drugs and society. The picture shows original interviews of young people, a great number of hitherto unpublished stock shots, selected records and stunning documents. The film shows a peculiar and relentless view of our century: wars, the present-day crisis, the worlds of cinema, literature, music, sports… the glaring and overwhelming evidence of the permanent danger of drugs brought together and condensed into a cruel and moving film. « Dope territory » is a film that clearly expresses what lots of people object to disclosing. With a great objectivity.
