Bucarest, visages anonymes

Frédéric Fichefet & Marta Bergman & 52' — 1994

Bucharest, one winter’s day three years after the fall of the Communist regime. In a square christened « Revolution Square » in 1989, a vagrant child tells « how the insanity began ». « Shots were fired there, people died, flowers were laid, that’s it ». A passer-by is offended: is that the impression you want to give of Romania? But in the end, what impression remains of extinguished hopes? The face of a man remembers how before he could afford a holiday at the seaside… Or the face of this woman who hangs on to false memories. Now « liberty reigns », she says, almost with regret. Before, under the dictatorship, everyone had his place and his certainties. Now everything is swept away! In echo, a fake Edith Piaf shouts that she « ne regrette rien » againt a cabaret backdrop. All around them, the city resembles nothing so much as an enormous inoperative construction site. In the debris, inhabitants draw their daily water from holes. One day, a lunatic ddecided to raze everything to the ground to reset memories back to zero…
