Rumania, summer 1990. At a stones’ throw from Bucharest, a timeless village: Clejany city the gypsies call it. There a few toothless elders recite th ballads of the heyducks – outlaws and defenders of justice in Mediaeval Rumania. Musical and fatalistic by temperament, these irrepressible gypsies endure in the shadows of history: Marius wagers his accordion in a game of dice; the witch buries a serpent at the bottom of the garden, a young woman dreams of it, and pershes; the drunken sheriff takes vengeance for the cruelty of his cohorts.
