In the early spring of 1943, Belgium saw the removal of bells added to the daily routine of the occupation. Their bronze represents a simple way to satisfy the war machine of the Third Reich. By seizing the bells, the occupying forces stole the hearts of the villages. These bells that cross the ages, that give rhythm to life, bring communities together or warn of an event… For many people, this requisition is a desecration! Thus, in the four corners of the country, people decide to save their bells. Hidden, buried or immersed, they will remain silent and protected until the Liberation. Fifty years later, these “bell savers” remember their exploits. They tell us about this popular resistance, symbolic and perhaps of good-natured appearance at the present time, but which marked their existence.
