Of sand and cement, letter to Elias

Jorge León & 57' — 2003

The starting point of this fi lm is the death of a woman, of a friend. Ana was born in Lisbon in 1953, and fl ed the Salazar dictatorship at 16 years of age, when she was pregnant. Ana commits suicide in Brussels in 1993. From one date to the other, a life travels past us, and a portrait is sketched out. From one date to the other, a woman wavers between revolt and despair. The fi lm, an initiatory puzzle, confronts the unrest generated by absence through image and sound. It narrates a journey, physical and mental during which the director travels towards what should be the foundations of Ana’s life: Lisbon, the white city, and moves on to a little village in Asturias, where his parents were born and grew up, and comes to terms with his own roots
