Names live nowhere

Dominique Loreau & 76/59' — 1994

A senegalese « griot » – a member of the cast of poets and musicians who safeguard Africa’s oral traditions – is on his way from Dakar to Brussels. He tells us the story of those who leave their country behind, sometimes daring to leave the circle into which they were born. Once in Brussels, the « griot » meets Nar and Sékou. Nar is an actor who has lived in Europe for 10 years, going from city to city, from one woman to another. Sékou is a student who has been there only for a few months and who must soon return home, unless … The film mixes fiction with documentary : it follows them for two days and two nights in situations both real and imaginary, as played and improvised by themselves : their friends, their lovers, their contacts with their native community. Meanwhile, life goes on in their country. Children are christened … thoughts turn to those far away.
