In the heart of a quiet social housing estate in Brussels, live Simona and her three children, Rim (23), David (18), and Sami (11).
Sami has been severely disabled since contracting encephalitis at eight months old. He is non-verbal and requires assistance with every aspect of daily life.
Simona is a single mother whose only means of support are unemployment benefits and integration income.
Over the past year, worry and exhaustion have taken their toll. Sami leaves her no time to breathe.
With every passing day, he moves a little closer to adulthood and the difficulties intensify.
Simona is at a crossroads. For the sake of her mental health and Sami’s well-being, a choice is slowly taking shape.
Rim and David are at a stage in life where they should be building their own future.
Unlike their peers, they serve as primary caregivers for their disabled brother – a role they will have to carry and embrace for the rest of their lives.
