The snapshot hunter

André Soupart & 20' — 1989

Dann, a studio specialized in portraits and art photography, is looking for young students who would work on beaches during the summer season, in Palavas-les-flots. Charming girls or picking them up, watching for advertising opportunities, each photographer has his own way, depending on the persons they meet. This is how the behaviour of both photographer and client is being revealed. Being accosted by a photographer creates an unsettling feeling among people. Confronted to his camera, we « freeze », trying to look fine, to impress him. The photographer becomes an ephemera starlet director. « The snapshot hunter » discloses the relationship between people and their image, or rather their idea about how they should look like on photos. Initially meant as a reflection on photography, « The snapshot hunter » is a gradual incursion into people’s intimagy, through the bias of portraits.
