Travelling through Spain. A young Belgian woman in search of her past, her future, through a part of Spanish history, through the social revolution of anarcho-syndicalilsts at the outset of the Civil War in Catalonia, 1936. A recent past – the great strike in the winter of 1960 in Belgium, Provo in Amsterdam, May ’68, the feminist movement – her past, her parent’s past, reflected and compaired to the far future that she has found in Catalonia in 1936. A Homage to Catalonia, in 1984. A film on freedom and utopia, starting from anarchism and its principale ‘To each according to his needs’. A confrontation between the ideology and Power, that is repression, and utopia, full of promises, becomes reality, full of anxieties. Like what happened in Russia of the soviets? Not a historical reconstruction, but one with subjectivism and emotions, a personal vision of the past and the future. The optimism of ’36 and ’76, with the rise of a new democracy in Spain, will they survive the everlasting confrontation with Power? The pessimism of the blood-stained week in may ’37, the end of the social revolution, does it rise again through the immobolization the fatalism and the despair of 1983, so close to 1984?
