The damned of the USSR

Victor Loupan & 29' — 1985

A year ago, a soviet prisoner of the Afghan resistance is liberated without conditions and brought back by two French filmmakers, Christophe de Ponfilly and Bertrand Gallet. Left in Pakistan he waits for political asylum in France… in vain. A few months later, Victor Loupan, the filmmaker, decides to go and look for him with Christophe de Ponfilly. Victor is Russian and lived in the USSR until he was 20. He belongs to the same generation than the young prisoners he is going to meet, and could have been soldier of the Soviet army as well. For the first time, three Soviet prisoners are filmed in their camp, forgotten by their country – where the Afghan war is a forbidden subject – and soon, by history. The damned of USSR… This report is a unique testimony of despair. Vietnam – Afghanistan, useless war, lies, horror, genocide, drugs. The same men, the same questions, the same lucidity.
