Praha – The return of the Newts

Pauline de Grunne & 42' — 1990

Four Reflections of Prague and Czechoslovakia today Evoking Karel Capek’s celebrated novel in her title, Pauline de Grunne offers us four portraits; four essential investigations into the future of Czechoslovakia and the meaning of its velvet revolution. The Revolution Eats its Leaders Vaclav Havel heads the government. Where are all the others? The objectors and dissidents haven’t followed him. Some have undergone arduous apprenticeships in political life. Now is the time for disillusionment and betrayal. The Fall Guys of the Regime Yesterday they were in prison. Today they are free. But is there still a place for them in this transfigured society? Not everybody can be Havel. In any case, the heroes have had their day. Workers: The Price to Pay What price reform for the working classes? The workers have won their freedom; is it in exchange for their jobs? Are they to be the first victims of a newly opened free market? The workers look forward to entering a market economy with enthusiasm and humor… black humor perhaps. Haute Couture in Prague The era of model workers is over. Heroes are no longer « à la mode ». But a renaissance in fashion alos needs its models… and someone prepared to redefine it. Pavla is aready a trademark, a name, a style. In her own way, she’s taking Prague by storm.
