No man's land

Frédéric Ledoux & 26' — 1999

Augustin, Marie-Grâce and their son Louis fled Rwanda in 1995. After four long years spent wandering through Africa, Augustin took his family to Belgium, to the place where he had studied for his degree in agronomy… Last winter, in his misfortune, he was more fortunate than others. He was in a hostel for four months, his plea for asylum was being rapidly processed, which gave him the right to basic social security. The assistance provided by the social services of Esneux, a small town near Liege, was most of the time warm and friendly. But since then, he has found no work, he has no proper income, no house, and to top it all, he has received from polite indifference to contempt. With a great deal of empathy, Frédéric Ledoux followed Augustin and his family in their everyday life for a few weeks. Augustin does not resent the denials, always looks neat and tidy, always has a pleasant smile, but one can feel the depth of his sorrow in every frame.
