Made in China

Julien Selleron & 65' — 2005

Beijing. In autumn 2004, Jia Zhang-Ke made a new film. As usual, the Chinese filmmaker works clandestinely, without official authorization, because the censorship office appreciates neither the free tone nor the questions raised by his works. Today, Jia Zhang-Ke is recognized around the world as a talented filmmaker. Around the world except in his own country where he is ignored. However, this filmmaker has chosen to live his passion, whatever it costs him, with his choices, his sensitivity, his desires. A daily struggle in a Chinese society that runs on cellphones and coca-cola but where no one has the freedom to express themselves. Through the portrait of Jia Zhang-Ke, her history, her work, her encounters, arise the contradictions and absurdities of a deeply authoritarian country suddenly passed to the market economy. But here, everything is moving so quickly … we must keep hoping that things will change, and that perhaps one day cinema and freedom will no longer be reserved for an elite but offered to all.
